New Zealand International Doctoral Research Scholarships




Education New Zealand is pleased to announce that the NZIDRS will run in 2015. The application form and associated documents will be available here from Mid-January 2015.

About NZIDRS

The NZIDRS provides full tuition fees plus a living stipend for up to 36 months for international students to undertake PhD study at a New Zealand university. The NZIDRS are funded by the New Zealand Government and administered by Education New Zealand.

The NZIDRS cover:
University tuition fees and associated student levies for 3 years
An annual living stipend of NZ$25,000 or NZ$2083.33 per month for 36 months
Medical insurance coverage up to NZ$600 annually for 3 years

Recipients can undertake PhD study in any discipline at any of New Zealand eight Universities:
AUT University, Lincoln University, Massey University, University of Auckland, University of Canterbury, University of Otago, University of Waikato, Victoria University of Wellington.

Eligibility criteria

In order to receive the scholarship, you must meet ALL five of the following eligibility criterion.

1. be a citizen of any country except New Zealand, Australia and Fiji

2. hold a minimum equivalent 3.6/4.0 GPA OR A / A+ average in your most recent or highest post graduate tertiary qualification

3. conduct your PhD study in New Zealand (not from a distance)

4. meet the requirements for direct entry into a PhD programme at a New Zealand University. This includes; having completed the required academic qualifications for direct entry and meeting the requirements for English language proficiency

5. If you have commenced your PhD studies in New Zealand, your start date must be after 15 January 2014
Selection criteria




The scholarships are awarded based on academic excellence and the impact of the proposed research for New Zealand. Research projects should have a tangible, positive effect on:
New Zealand’s economy, in terms of international trade and business development in key sectors
Or, New Zealand’s population in terms of health and safety
Or, Research and scholarship in the above two areas

Biaya Hidup

Biaya hidup di New Zealand biasanya sedikit lebih tinggi untuk kota-kota besar seperti Auckland dan Wellington daripada kota-kota yang lebih kecil seperti Palmerston North.

Berikut ini contoh biaya hidup yang dicantumkan dalam situs-situs resmi beberapa universitas. Tentu saja besarnya biaya hidup juga sangat tergantung dari cara hidup orang yang bersangkutan. Orang yang lebih hemat pasti biaya hidupnya lebih sedikit daripada orang yang kurang hemat. Tempat tinggal dekat atau jauh dari kampus juga bisa mengurangi atau menambah biaya transportasi. Daftar di bawah ini bisa dipakai sebagai pedoman saja.

Biaya Sekolah


Biaya sekolah di universitas dan lembaga-lembaga pendidikan setingkat universitas di New Zealand untuk mahasiswa asing (international student) memang lebih tinggi daripada biaya kuliah untuk mahasiswa lokal.

Yang termasuk kategori mahasiswa lokal adalah orang-orang yang mempunyai status permanent residence (PR) dan citizen (warga negara). Namun kalau dibandingkan dengan biaya universitas di Indonesia maka biaya kuliah disini untuk mahasiswa asing relatif bisa bersaing. Apalagi kalau dilihat dari kenyataan bahwa ijazah dari universitas/institut di New Zealand bertaraf internasional dan “laku” untuk dipakai bekerja di negara-negara lain seperti Australia, Inggris, AS, dll.

Dengan ijazah dari universitas terbaikpun di Indonesia si pemegang ijazah tidak akan mendapat “tempat” yang sama di pasar kerja internasional seperti halnya alumni universitas/institut di New Zealand. Kecuali bila orang tersebut punya ijazah lain dari luar Indonesia, seperti dari New Zealand misalnya.
Uang kuliah dibayarkan setiap tahunnya, tidak seperti di Indonesia yang dibayar setiap semester. Semester ganjil di universitas/institut disini di mulai pada bulan Februari/Maret dan semester genap berakhir pada bulan November.

Biaya kuliah per tahunnya bisa berbeda-beda tergantung jurusan yang diambil dan tingkatannya. Khusus untuk mahasiswa S3 (PhD) biaya yang dikenakan untuk mahasiswa asing disamakan dengan biaya mahasiswa lokal. Namun untuk S3 kekhususan (seperti misalnya Doctor of Clinical Psychology atau Doctor of Education dll) biaya kuliah untuk mahasiswa asing tidak disamakan dengan mahasiswa lokal. Peraturan ini sudah berlaku sejak tahun 2006. Tetapi biaya kuliah dari satu universitas ke universitas lain relatif sama atau hampir sama.
Berikut ini beberapa contoh biaya kuliah dari beberapa universitas di New Zealand. Untuk lebih jelasnya bisa dibuka website universitas/institut masing-masing karena biayanya setiap tahun bisa berubah di tahun berikutnya.
Untuk mahasiswa asing tingkat S1 di University of Auckland:
Biaya kuliah per tahun sebelum termasuk biaya-biaya lain seperti biaya administrasi, praktikum (kalau ada), diktat kuliah/field trip (kalau ada), buku-buku wajib (text books and supplies – sekitar NZ$500/semester), asuransi kesehatan (wajib), dan biaya hidup.

Semua universitas di New Zealand dilengkapi dengan perpustakaan yang sangat lengkap yang berisi jutaan buku dan akses jurnal yang sangat banyak, namun adakalanya mahasiswa (terutama mahasiswa S1) harus membeli buku cetak wajib karena jumlah buku wajib di perpustakaan tidak sama banyak dengan jumlah mahasiswa yang terdaftar. Dengan demikian mahasiswa harus membeli buku cetak sendiri di toko-toko buku yang terletak di kampus atau dekat kampus.

The Reserve Bank of New Zealand offers two scholarships for students studying Economics, Finance and Banking at a New Zealand University. They are the Reserve Bank of New Zealand University Scholarship and Māori and Pacific Islands Scholarship.

To be eligible applicants must be studying full time at a New Zealand University and be legally entitled to work in New Zealand.

Reserve Bank of New Zealand University Scholarships

The Reserve Bank of New Zealand offers two scholarships each year to students who are majoring in Economics, Finance or Banking and who are entering their Honours, Masters or final year of PhD study. Students must have attained at least a B+ average and be studying full time over the academic year (February to November).
The value of each scholarship will be $10,000. This money will be paid fortnightly during the academic year.
In addition to the $10,000, an offer of employment is provided at the completion of your qualification. It is important to note that a condition of receipt of the scholarship is that you must accept the position with the Reserve Bank and must remain in that position for a specified period of time. Should this condition not be met you will be required to repay the sum of the scholarship payments made to you.
Should you be unsuccessful in obtaining a financial scholarship, you may be considered for a graduate position, if you meet the required criteria.
We welcome applications from international students, provided you are legally entitled to work in New Zealand.
Once short listing has been completed, successful applicants will be asked to attend a half day interview process at the Bank in Wellington. This typically takes place at the beginning of February.

Māori and Pacific Islands Scholarship

The Māori and Pacific Islands Scholarship in Economics, Finance and Banking has been developed as part of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand's Equal Employment Opportunities programme.
The purpose of the Scholarship is to encourage Māori and Pacific Island students to pursue studies in the field of economics, finance and banking studies. The Reserve Bank’s objective is to increase the number of Māori and Pacific Island students with tertiary qualifications in economics, finance and banking studies to honours level, and thereby increase the numbers of these students employed in policy departments within the sector.

Eligibility

The scholarship is open to Māori and Pacific Island university students who have completed Economics, Finance or Banking studies at the 100 level (completed first year of university), who attained at least a B+ grade and who intend to continue studying to Honours level. Please note that students who are entering their first year of university are not eligible.
Applicants must be studying full time at a New Zealand university. The scholarship will be continued for the original holder up to Honours level (fourth year) providing the holder continues to perform to the required standard.

Value

The scholarship is valued at $1,500 in the first year, increased to $2,500 in the second year and $3,500 in the final year of study.
The successful applicant will be paired with a Reserve Bank staff member who will act as a mentor. The mentor will make contact regularly during the scholarship programme and can assist with research, advice and provide you with access to some of our resources at the Bank.


Enrolment

Evidence of enrolment in a full time degree course and payment of fees will be required with the application.

About Us

Kami adalah tiga orang pemerhati dan sekaligus konsultan pendidikan. Dua dari kami berdomisili di New Zealand dan telah menetap di negara ini sejak awal 1999. Sejak pertama kali datang ke negara ini kami telah berkecimpung dalam dunia pendidikan di New Zealand baik sebagai mahasiswa-mahasiswa postgraduate maupun sebagai dosen tamu di salah satu universitas pemerintah (public university) disini. Lebih dari itu kami telah terlibat dengan dunia pendidikan , khususnya pendidikan tinggi ,sejak 1986 baik di Indonesia maupun Australia. Bekerjasama dengan rekan kami di Indonesia yang merupakan editor buku sekaligus pakar internet untuk membuka website ini.

Mengapa kami merasa perlu membuka website ini? Alasan kami sederhana saja. Dari pengalaman kami selama ini kami sangat prihatin dengan kenyataan yang ada. Cukup banyak orang-orang Indonesia yang datang ke New Zealand untuk sekolah di lembaga-lembaga pendidikan disini ternyata kecewa karena sekolah yang disarankan oleh agen mereka di Indonesia tidak sesuai dengan harapan mereka. 

Ini bukan karena sekolah mereka disini buruk kualitasnya tetapi lebih karena sekolah yang dituju, baik bidang ilmu dan/atau tingkatannya, tidak sesuai dengan kualifikasi pendidikan mereka sebelumnya. Ternyata informasi yang mereka peroleh dari agen atau perantara mereka di Indonesia tidak sesuai dengan kenyataan yang ada di New Zealand.

Ini bisa dimengerti karena banyak agen mereka di Indonesia tidak tahu bagaimana keadaan sebenarnya di New Zealand. Lebih dari itu mereka belum tentu paham dan punya pengalaman tentang bagaimana sistem pendidikan di New Zealand yang notabene sangat berbeda dengan Indonesia.

Dengan demikian kami memberanikan diri untuk menerbitkan website ini dengan tujuan website ini bisa menjadi ajang informasi gratis bagi khalayak di Indonesia yang berminat melanjutkan sekolah di New Zealand. Dengan pengalaman yang intensif dan ekstensif serta jaringan yang luas di bidang pendidikan di New Zealand kami berharap informasi yang disajikan di website ini dapat membantu ‘saudara-saudara’ kami di tanah air.
